How Sleep Affects Fertility In Men

Sleep and Male Fertility

There’s a huge link between sleep and fertility in men, and much of it comes down to the sex hormone testosterone. So, if you’re planning to start a family, improving your sleep could be one of the most powerful ways to optimise your testosterone levels—and, by extension, your fertility.

🧠 What does testosterone have to do with sleep?

Testosterone levels naturally rise during sleep. But here’s the catch: it takes at least three hours of sleep before testosterone begins to elevate. On the flip side, the longer you’re awake, the lower your testosterone becomes.

Testosterone plays a key role in both libido and fertilisation. That’s why getting deep, quality sleep is essential when fertility is a priority.

🛌 There’s a golden number of hours of sleep ideal for male fertility

According to a 2017 study involving over 900 men, seven to eight hours of sleep—ideally before midnight—supports the healthiest sperm. Researchers studied factors like bedtime, total sleep duration, and sperm quality across different participant groups. They found that men who:

  • Slept less than seven hours,
  • Slept more than nine hours, or
  • Went to bed after midnight

had reduced sperm count, survival, and motility.

🚫 Sleep deprivation, late nights, and fertility challenges

Lack of sleep and consistently going to bed late can increase the production of Anti-sperm Antibodies (ASA). These naturally occurring antibodies can interfere with fertility by attacking sperm, reducing the chances of successful fertilisation.

That’s why it’s critical to protect your sleep window, especially when trying to conceive.

⚖️ Fertility and sleep are closely linked in men and women

Emerging research now confirms that high-quality sleep improves fertility outcomes in both genders. Learn more about the female side of the story here.

For men, maintaining optimal testosterone levels requires striking the right balance: not sleeping too little or too much, and avoiding late bedtimes.
